How To Move Your Wordpress Blog To a New Domain
Need to know how to move your blog from Wordpress.com or even your own domain to a new domain? It seems like it would be complicated, but it’s one of the easiest tasks you can perform in Wordpress. You’ll be able to get packed, get moved in, and feel like a total Wordpress pro doing it:
How To Move a Wordpress Blog Using the Import/Export Feature
1) In the blog you want to move, go to “Tools” in the left sidebar of your Dashboard (older versions of Wordpress should have a tap across the top of the interface).
2) Select the “Export” option an download the export file (.xml).
3) After you have installed Wordpress on your server, in the dashboard of the new blog go to “Tools” and select “Import”.
4) Chooe the “Wordpress” option.
5) Use the browsing tool to find and select the exported (.xml) file from your old blog, and once you have selected it, click the “Upload and Import” button.
That’s it! This export/import process will transfer your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags ONLY – you will have to reinstall your theme and your plugins one by one.
If this post helped you move up in the Wordpress world, leave me a comment. If you have any questions or concerns, you can leave a comment for that, too.
Happy Blogging ![]()

Hi! I finally succeeded in moving a wordpress.com site with export and import to a new private hosted place by downsizing the size of the posts, images, pages etc. The .com blog existed out of so many images that it wasn’t able to move it by importing and exporting. So if you ever deal with such a problem make sure you make your big images smaller, my client had images of 4 MB each.. That’s not gonna work. Good Luck!
WOW! 4MB images? Images that are to be posted on the internet should ALWAYS be compressed to the smallest size and resolution possible (without compromising the integrity of the image, of course).
Also, bloggers should backup their blogs by exporting and saving the posts in .xml format periodically. That way, if your server crashes or any other freak accident takes place all will not be lost.
Thanks for sharing your experience and for the useful tip, Susan
